Victoria artist Bronwyn McMillin has won the Takao Tanabe Prize for up-and-coming B.C. painters, with a $10,000 purse.
The third annual award — named after Vancouver Island’s Takao Tanabe, one of Canada’s leading painters — is designated for an emerging artist at the early stage of their career.
Winners of the Takao Tanabe Prize are selected by contemporary art curators from art museums and galleries in British Columbia. B.C.-born artist Lyn Price took home the award in 2018.
McMillin recently showcased her work in Slow Time Machine, a collaboration with Graham Macaulay, at the Forest City Gallery in London, Ont.
In 2017, she exhibited at the Camden Arts Centre and the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and participated in the Heima Artist Residency in East Iceland.
