Saanich sculptor Maarten Schaddelee will unveil his new furniture pieces this weekend at an exhibition of work inspired by the natural beauty surrounding his home and the Maarnada Gallery and Sculpture Garden.

For the first time, Schad-delee is creating furniture in the form of sculpted chairs. The public is invited to view these and other new works at the Schaddelee Fine Art Show today and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Maarnada Studio, gallery and sculpture garden at 4635 Vantreight Dr.

Schaddelee was inspired by his participation in the Eric Charman's 80th Birthday Chair-ity Event, which featured 15 chairs decorated by prominent B.C. artists.

"My heart is in sculpture. But this is an exciting new direction for me because it allows me to combine function with sculptural elements," Schaddelee said.

The fall show features sculptures in stone and wood, including 800-year-old Vancouver Island red cedar originally destined to be cedar shakes. There are also many pieces in yellow cedar.

Other works on display include carved paintings of plants and animals.
