Local performers Danton Jay and Kristia Di Gregorio are headlining a benefit concert designed to unite the creative community through environmental awareness.

The Artists for Sustainability and Community Connections concert is scheduled for Jan. 11 at St. Ann’s Auditorium. Di Gregorio and Jay will be joined at the event by West My Friend, another environmentally focused local act. The event is in aid of Creatively United for the Planet, a Victoria society that produces art programs, business initiatives and live events with a green- and community-based focus.

In addition to the musical offerings, Artists for Sustainability and Community Connections will also feature a wide-ranging silent auction boasting more than 20 pieces of local artwork and artifacts, including contributions from Tatjana Angermeyer, Daniela Lambert and Jillian Bunton, among many others.

Also up for grabs is a pair of passes to the 2014 Rifflandia festival, and pre-release copies of Di Gregorio’s upcoming Joby Baker-produced album, The Whiplash Curve, among other items.

Tickets are $20 (plus service charges) at eventbrite.ca and Lyle’s Place. Doors are at 6:30 p.m. Music starts at 7.

St. Ann’s Auditorium is located at 835 Humboldt St.

Operators of the Royal Theatre and McPherson Playhouse are giving supporters a reason to celebrate with a festival of music and dance in honour of the venues’ 100th birthdays.

The Royal and McPherson Theatres Society, which operates both venues, is staging the Centennial Festival from May 18 to 25. The local-centric lineup of nine events is impressive and meant to be indicative of the city’s rich arts community. Programming includes everything from musician Daniel Lapp (May 23, McPherson Playhouse) and choreographer Crystal Pite (May 21, Royal Theatre), to guest jazz trumpeter Chris Botti, who performs with the Victoria Symphony at the Royal Theatre on May 25.

The Portland-based, female-fronted electro-pop act Wild Ones is anything but original — on paper, that is. In practice, it’s another matter entirely.

The group has a way with melody that sets the mood just right, and there’s just enough presence in the voice of Danielle Sullivan for it to qualify as haunting.

Good news for fans of the band: Wild Ones will be in Victoria on Tuesday for their first appearance. The group is touring in support of its 2013 debut, Keep it Safe. Tickets for the Lucky Bar date are $11.50 at Lyle’s Place, Ditch Records and ticketweb.ca. Doors are at 8 p.m.

To celebrate its maiden voyage to B.C. (the group is also playing tonight in Vancouver), Wild Ones are offering a free download of Hold On, We’re Going Home, their fantastic cover of the Drake smash.

By this time next week, local singer/songwriter/educator Anne Schaefer will be in Bosnia. Yes, you read that right.

To get her new adventure started in grand style, she is hosting a “bon voyage” concert tonight at Hermann’s Jazz Club. Schaefer, who says she will be writing and releasing music along the way, will be joined at Hermann’s by some heavy-duty special guests, including Sean Drabitt (bass), Kelby MacNayr (drums) and Julia Wakal (vocals/trumpet).

Show is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Hermann’s Jazz Club is at 753 View St.

Vancouver favourite Longwalkshortdock has always enjoyed a special relationship with his Victoria fans. It is a bond that strengthened considerably following his last-minute addition to the Rifflandia festival last summer.

The live electronic performer (born Dave King) is back in town next week for the first time following his Rifflandia triumph. King filled the spot vacated by British duo The Orb, who were unable to make their Market Square appearance at the festival.

Fans were delirious from his mix of programmed beats and live-mix hysteria, so expectations are the his Sugar nightclub date set for Jan. 10 will be similarly excellent. That he will be joined the RIM Visuals for the performance only sweetens the deal. Doors are at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $22.50 at Lyle’s Place, Ditch Records and ticketweb.ca.
