Celebrate a link to Saanich’s agricultural roots — and eat as many strawberries as you can handle — at the Saanich Strawberry Festival, at Beaver Lake Park, Saturday, July 8.

The biggest change to the 56-year-old crowd-pleaser is that the event takes place on a Saturday, not Sunday, as it historically has.

The festival features performances by the Soul Shakers, Slim Sandy and the Hillbilly Boppers, the Unfaithful Servants and the Commodores Big Band on the main stage.

Enjoy a wide variety of family-friendly activities, including information displays, face-painting, program demonstrations, arts and craft stations and bouncy castles.

Seasoned festival attendees know to arrive early with cash in hand for the $1 strawberry and ice cream ticket sales.

There will also be other food vendors on hand.

Parking on-site is limited. To encourage coming by bicycle, Capital Bike will provide valet bike parking (near the main stage).

A free shuttle bus service will also run from Saanich Commonwealth Place and the grassy overflow parking off Elk Lake Drive to Beaver Beach. The shuttle will run until 4 p.m. Transit riders can alight at the Royal Oak Transit Exchange and walk a short distance to catch the shuttle at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

The event is free and runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 8 at Beaver Lake Park. Tickets for ice-cream and Michell’s Farm strawberries can be purchased between 11 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. (or until sold out). Ticket holders can then redeem their tickets between 1 and 3 p.m.
