Well, we're doing it again - the TC is bringing back its So You Think You Can Write contest.

For me it is exciting and gratifying. First because our new Acting Editor-In-Chief, Denise Helm, thinks it is a relevant and good thing for the paper and the community. Second because I get to work with our three amazing writer judges (John Gould, Kathy Page, Susan Stenson) and see other local writers learn and grow over four intense weeks. And finally because I get to come back to this space and codify some of my experience and hopefully hear from people about their own journeys.

The entry guidelines for our contest this year are slightly different.  Following the example of our judges last year we have given potential contestants a more specific assignment: write a 250 to 500-wordie in the genre of your choice making sure you include these four words newspaper, whale, impress, cosmos.  The entry deadline is midnight September 8. All the details are in the article here.

No matter the outcome of the contest, it has already been a success in my mind. We had an entrant today who told me she had just written her first short story of her adult life.  That's what it is all about - encouraging people to write!
