The Sooke Philharmonic Society’s Philharmonic Fling, an annual free outdoor summer concert set to place in July in Sooke, has been postponed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The full-size community orchestra, made up of 60 semi-professional musicians, performs eight concerts a year, plus the Philharmonic Fling. Small ensembles, made up of members of the orchestra, also appear regularly at area community events and fundraisers.

The Philharmonic Fling, an open-air pops concert, is described as a way for the society to say “thank you” to area residents for their support. The event is one of the largest summer musical events to take place in Sooke.

“We join all Sooke and area residents in the hope that this is just a postponement and not a cancellation and that we will be able assemble together again before the rains come and celebrate with a program of pops family fun music,” said Kathleen Campbell, society board president.

The concert, originally set to play at Ed Macgregor Park in Sooke, would have celebrated its 18th year on July 5.

The society will continue to monitor conditions and may set a new concert date after consultation with community health and public officials.

The society’s board had earlier announced an indefinite postponement of all scheduled events until the end of June, including a performance of Mozart’s Requiem in April and the Sooke Secret Garden Tour, the society’s annual signature fundraiser, in June.
