A chance to try weaving at Scrappy Last Saturdays

Collaborate on a community weaving project by turning scraps into art on a massive loom while learning about environmental impact at SUPPLY Victoria’s Scrappy Last Saturdays event, Nov. 25.

At Scrappy Last Saturdays families with school-aged children (ages seven to 12) are invited for a morning of affordable art activity. Each monthly workshop addresses a waste problem — and what people can do to help through a hands-on creative reuse activity — using reclaimed materials.

This month’s event is Water Weaving, which reflects on society’s relationship with water and the impact of pollutants like dyes.

The event is free to join (donations appreciated), but registration is required. There are 24 tickets available (please include adults as well as children in your tally) for free or by donation. There are also four drop-in spots available on a first-come-first-serve-basis. Guardians must be present for the entirety of the workshop.

The event runs 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 25 at SUPPLY Victoria, 750 Fairfield Rd.

Free drumming workshop for beginners

Join one of the most popular music events in Victoria as Drum Victoria presents a free Drumming Workshop at the Fairfield Community Place, Sunday.

The workshop is great introduction to drumming, with beginners welcome.

Drums and other fun percussion instruments are provided for everyone, but if you do have your own drum, you are invited to bring it along.

The rhythms played at the workshop are surprisingly easy to learn, with class handouts available to be taken home.

The event is free to join but pre-registration is required. The event runs 2 to 3:15 p.m. Nov. 26 in the Gary Oak Room of the Fairfield Community Place, 1335 Thurlow Rd. Ample parking.

For more information, and to register, go to drumvictoria.com.

Learn some new techniques at the canning swap

Share recipes, ideas, tips or swap what you have preserved at a Canning Swap at the Compost Education Centre, Saturday.

The gathering is an opportunity to learn from other canning enthusiasts about what ingredients to use or techniques to employ for successful canning.

You can bring along a jar for others to taste-test. Organizers will supply bowls and spoons, gluten free crackers and chips.

Bring your choice of home canning goods to swap out with someone else’s delicacies.

Admission by donation, with a minimum $5 donation recommended. The event runs 10 a.m. to noon, Nov. 25 at the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre, 1216 North Park St. The site has paths made of gravel and wood chips. It may be difficult to operate some mobility devices on site, especially on the gravel paths.
