Why: Vancouver’s Hotel Mira has been slowly building toward a show of its own at the Capital Ballroom, after years of support slots around Victoria. The pop-rock act kicks off its 19-date Canadian tour Wednesday in Victoria, with opening sets by Fake Shark and Cold Fame. The hardworking group, featuring singer Charlie Kerr, bassist Mike Noble, guitarist Clark Grieve, and drummer Cole George, has been a staple on rock radio stations in Canada for several years, which has the band ready for prime-time. This could be Hotel Mira’s official coming out party on Vancouver Island.
FOR THE END OF TIME

Why: This interactive performance celebrates the pre-eminent work of French composer Olivier Messiaen, who wrote Quartet for the End of Time in a German prisoner-of-war camp during the Second World War. Clarinetist and curator Keith MacLeod, who retired in 2022 after 40 seasons as principal clarinet with the Victoria Symphony, will offer insight into the historical background of the work, followed by a performance by his quartet featuring the esteemed talents of Julian Vitek (violin), Martin Bonham (cello), and Robert Holliston (piano). It’s a rare opportunity merge the past with the present over the course of a single night of performance.

Why: Nanaimo-born, New York-based Aisslinn Nosky returns to the Vancouver Island area this week for a series of concerts, starting with a performance Friday of music by Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Telemann, and Emily Doolittle. The celebrated violinist and concertmaster (who made her solo debut with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra at eight years old) will lead Victoria Baroque through a range of performances in the coming days, including concerts Saturday at Artspring on Saltspring Island, Sunday at Brentwood College, and Monday at the Victoria Event Centre.
