Why: Victoria’s Edie Daponte is a regular performer at several of the city’s jazz haunts, but she tackles a job of a different description on her new recording, Under Paris Skies. A tribute to the French jazz made famous by Édith Piaf, the recording will be celebrated in grand style Friday with a concert at the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre in Oak Bay. Daponte will be joined for the concert by a very capable quartet featuring Joey Smith (bass), Karel Roessingh (piano), Damian Graham (drums) and Aaron Watson (guitar). Highest recommendation.

Why: Brad Prevedoros is deep into a career that continues to impress, and his new recording should add to his reputation as one of the foremost guitarists in the area. Cloud Hidden is album No. 15 from the Galiano Island-based Prevedoros, who will be joined at the Saturday concert celebrating its release by bassist Paul Wilkinson-Teel and percussionists Brad Hawkes and Ray Rothschild. The Wood Hall in the Victoria Conservatory of Music is tailor-made for Prevedoros’s West Coast flamenco.

Why: The shapeshifting entity that is Victoria collective Astrocolor will have the Capital Ballroom teeming Saturday night, with their dance-happy live electronic music as the backdrop. Nothing is off limits musically during Astrocolor’s concerts, and surprises are to be expected, from unannounced guests to the high-wire antics of frontman Neil Cooke-Dallin. He’s one of many must-see members in what has become one of the city’s most dependable live attractions.
