The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria has named Nancy Noble as its new director.

The Saskatchewan-raised Noble comes to Victoria from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, where she had been CEO since 2016. Prior to her position at the Halifax gallery, the largest art museum in Atlantic Canada, she served as the CEO of the Museum of Vancouver for more than a decade.

Noble was named director by the gallery’s board on Wednesday, filling a position held previously by longtime director Jon Tupper. Janyce Ronson had served as acting director of the Moss Street gallery since 2021, following Tupper’s retirement.

“Nancy has extensive experience in the management of art galleries and other cultural institutions and a proven ability to lead change,” AGGV board president Chris Lawless said in a statement.

“With plans for a new AGGV location downtown, it is a huge plus to the gallery that Nancy has experience leading a major building project, as well as proven success in directing capital campaigns.”

Noble will join the gallery — in its 71st year of operation — in June.

“[T]he building is a means to an end and that end is to be inclusive and responsive and provide great programming through art,” Noble said in a statement.
