Staff put up a sign at the base of Whistler Mountain in Whistler on Sunday. The Whistler Blackcomb resort which is owned by Vail Resorts shut down operations Saturday due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis taking place worldwide.

Mount Washington is shutting down for the foreseeable future, joining other ski resorts across the province and the country that have stopped ski lifts.

The resort said the closure, effective Monday, would be reassessed daily as the national response to the spread of COVID-19 continues.

“This is an extraordinary set of circumstances and while we regret this sudden action we are committed to being part of the solution to the COVID-19 [Coronavirus] crisis,” the resort said in a statement on its website.

Just a day earlier, the resort announced it would stay open, as others closed down.

Whistler Blackcomb closed Sunday for a week as parent company Vail Resorts announced the closure of all their North American resorts from March 15 to 22. Lodging will remain open for current guests or those with existing reservations.

Cypress Mountain Resort in West Vancouver, Vernon’s Silver Star Mountain Resort and Whitewater Ski Resort near Nelson are among those now closed.
