The Victoria HarbourCats believe they are the first sports franchise in Canada to accept various forms of cryptocurrency for purchases of season tickets and corporate partnerships.

The team has decided to accept Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin this year, and expect to expand options if demand requires it.

“This is something our general manager, Brad Norris-Jones, has spent a lot of time looking into, and we’re ready to work with this payment method for various partnerships,” said managing partner Jim Swanson. “This is simply being with the times. It’s an emerging method of doing business, and we’re pleased to be among the leaders in the sports world on this. We are not afraid of new territory.”

Swanson said they aren’t sure how many people will use the digital currency option, but they have trained staff to deal with whatever the baseball-loving public throw at them.

Premier League’s Arsenal and the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks already work with cryptocurrency.

“This will open up more opportunities for working with the HarbourCats, and hopefully also bring additional awareness to these currency markets,” said Norris-Jones.

For the moment, the HarbourCats will only accept cryptocurrency for season tickets and sponsorships, but game-day ticket purchases are next in line and could be in place by the time the season starts June 1 at Royal Athletic Park.
