Victoria International Airport has been recognized as the most efficient airport with fewer than five million passengers annually in North America.

The airport was selected in the 2020 Global Airport Performance Benchmarking Report from the Air Transport Research Society, based in Maryland, and the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida.

Geoff Dickson, president and chief executive of the Victoria Airport Authority, said being recognized on a global scale “means the world to us.”

“We have always been very proud of our ability to remain highly efficient by keeping costs low for our airlines and maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction,” Dickson said.

“It has never been a more important time for us to continue this successful formula and do everything we can to support our airlines and exceed the level of service our customers expect.”

Analysts determine efficiency based on factors such as financial results, cost competiveness, airport charges, number of passengers, and number of planes arriving and departing.

This year’s report from the research society covered 204 airports and 24 airport groups in Asia Pacific, Europe and North America.

Like others around the world, the Victoria airport saw numbers of passengers and flights plummet because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Airlines are increasing domestic flights in and out of Victoria as passenger numbers move up, however. Last year, 1.9 million passengers travelled through the Victoria airport.
