B.C. Ferries made money in the last quarter, thanks to a boost in traffic for August and September.

British Columbia Ferries Services announced second quarter net earnings of $66.5 million.

The corporation said Friday that revenue increased to $268.6 million from $256.9 million, including $7.4 million in ferry transportation fees from the B.C. government.

"After a soft first four months of the fiscal year, there was a noticeable improvement in traffic during August and September," B.C. Ferries said in a statement.

B.C. Ferries says its operating expenses increased slightly from $183.4 million to $184.5 million compared with the same time last year.

Despite making a profit in the quarter, B.C. Ferries says it generally loses money on most of its routes. It plans to increase fares by 12 per cent over the next three years. It is also looking at service cuts on its money-losing routes.
