Telus is getting rid of some costly fees for its wireless customers.
The carrier says it's no longer charging a $35 activation fee for new wireless customers, or a $25 equipment exchange fee for renewing customers who purchase a new device. But Telus says it will begin charging consumers $10 on Nov. 1 for new SIM cards to cover the product cost previously included in renewal and activation fees.
Telus says a new SIM card - which will allow devices to work on the Telus network - is only required when customers don't have a compatible Telus SIM card.
The CRTC is asking Canadians for help to develop a national retail code that would cover smartphones and tablets to make contracts less confusing. Telus and other wireless carriers such as Rogers, Bell and new player Wind Mobile all say they support a national code for consumers.
