A journalist working in his native South Sudan is being honoured with the Alumni Excellence Award by Royal Roads University.

Mading Ngor was a child when violence in Sudan led to his father's death and his village destroyed. He moved to Canada where he was educated. In 2010, Ngor earned a bachelor of arts in RRU's professional communication program.

"He returned to the new country of South Sudan, where he is a fearless radio journalist and a contributor to other media outlets such as Reuters and the Huffington Post," RRU said.

Also receiving an award is York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe, a community leader who is being honoured with the Alumni Leadership Award.

With more than 33 years of experience in law enforcement, Jolliffe graduated with a master of arts in leadership. He is being recognized for team-building among his staff, and for community outreach pro-grams.
