Premier Horgan to open Island Economic Summit

Premier John Horgan will deliver an opening address at the 13th annual Vancouver Island State of the Island Economic Summit, scheduled for Oct. 23-24 in Nanaimo.

The annual conference brings together businesses and stakeholders on the Island to understand the economy and where it’s heading.

The conference will be held at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre in Nanaimo.

“It is always valuable to have the premier provide [an] insightful update on the economic state of the province as well as perspective regarding issues vital to our success on Vancouver Island,” said Mark Smith, chair of the summit.

Forest council awards student scholarships

The B.C. Council of Forest Industries has announced the 13 student winners in its annual scholarship program, including Victoria’s Robin Ripley, who is studying forest and natural areas management at the B.C. Institute of Technology.

“We’re proud to support the education of these talented students from around the province as they embark on their future careers in the B.C. forest sector,” said Susan Yurkovich, chief executive of COFI. “Despite our current challenges, we continue to see a bright future for this important industry.”

COFI established the scholarship program in 2007 with the goal of encouraging young people to choose professional, technical or trades careers in the forest sector.

Walmart first tried the store-inside-a-store idea at its Stockyards location in Toronto to bring Japanese-inspired lifestyle products to Walmart.

The store will open with a bit of fanfare, including a taiko drum demonstration, on Oct. 5.

Ping pong wars

The event will be held at Pier A at Ogden Point (211 Dallas Rd.) and will feature teams from Victoria’s high-tech sector battling it out for pong supremacy.

All registered teams will be asked to donate $1,000 to participate in the tournament. All funds will go to the World Partnership Walk and the VIATEC Foundation. The goal this year is to raise more than $20,000, attract more than 200 players from more than 20 high-tech teams.
