Salish Sea Industrial Services has been awarded a $1.8-million contract to repair Ship Point.
Work began this week and should be completed by March 2019. The work will replace the original timber-piling pier structure built in 1949 with new steel pilings. Repairs will focus only on the original pier structure and are in line with the City of Victoria’s master-planning process for the site.
“Ship Point plays a major part in the identity of Victoria, serving as a site for dozens of public and family-friendly events throughout the year, making it a vital community amenity for our organization,” said Ian Robertson, chief executive of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority. “This repair work will allow us to revitalize the pier for the short-term, while we work with the city on realizing the long-term potential for this site.”
Salish Sea, a marine construction business owned by the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations in partnership with Ralmax, will employ five full-time staff and local subcontractors on the site for the duration of the project.
The harbour authority owns 65 per cent of the pier, and the city owns 35 per cent.
Victoria web studio expands territory
Victoria’s Upanup Studios, which expanded to a second location last year with an office in Calgary, is designing websites in three provinces with a new site launched for an Ontario municipality. The website, for Clearview, Ont., is the company’s 25th municipal website. “Local government is an area where we can make a big difference,” said chief executive Peter Knapp. “Our team is extremely motivated to make life easier for people by crafting better online experiences. We found a great fit with the user-focused and engagement-driven solutions we build for municipalities.” In the works by the six-year-old company are websites for municipal governments in Collingwood, Ont. and Grande Prairie Alta.
New hospice CEO
The Victoria Hospice Society has appointed Kevin Harter as its new chief executive. Harter, who has worked in long-term care for 18 years and is currently chief executive of York Care Centre in New Brunswick, will step into the role Nov. 13. “Kevin has deep expertise in both leading organizations and spearheading national research aimed to drive innovation, improve quality of care, and create services to improve the health and well-being of older Canadians and their caregivers,” said Marguerite Rowe, chair of the Victoria Hospice Society. “With his proven track record of success, we are confident that Kevin will bring energy, passion and innovation to our organization at a critical time.”
Library deal to CCM
The Vancouver Island Regional Library has selected CCM Construction to renovate its Sidney branch. Renos are underway and expected to be complete in May 2019. A temporary library is open at 1A - 2353 Bevan Ave.
