More than 1,000 runners and 1,000 spectators came out for the Peninsula Runners Oak Bay Kool Half Marathon Sunday morning, according to police estimates.
“It had one of the largest turnouts I’ve seen,” said Oak Bay police Sgt. Ian Craib.
Victoria’s Jim Finlayson finished with the fastest time of 1:09:13. He was among 689 runners who completed the half marathon.
Marc Trottier of Sidney led 234 finishers in the KOOL 10.73K with a time of 39:53. An additional 193 runners completed the 5K, led by Victoria’s Mary McGregor, who finished in 19 minutes. And “Garden Party” led 40 teams in the Asics Ekiden relay, with a time of 1:30:11.
Oak Bay police and reserves were joined by Saanich police for the event. They reported no major incidents, beyond providing vehicle escorts to residents who were unaware of road closures.
