The family behind a Victoria bakery institution has tweaked its name and completed renovations.
After 50 years in business downtown on Fort Street, the Dutch Bakery and Coffee Shop is now named the Dutch Bakery and Diner.
Some people didn’t realize there is a restaurant on the premises, said Brook Schaddelee, a third-generation family member and part-owner.
The Dutch Bakery was founded in 1956 by Kees Schaddelee, who moved here with his family from the Netherlands. Many of his original recipes are still on the menu.
There is new flooring, cabinetry and refrigeration systems.
“It’s a lot more open. It makes it more welcoming,” said Brook Schaddelee. “We’ve had nothing but good responses.”
The traditional look of its 65-seat restaurant was retained.
A grand reopening is set for March 7.
A total of 26 staff work at the Dutch Bakery.
