Workers are completing bracing work this week on the Broughton Street Pier walkway in Victoria Harbour as part of the $1-million upgrading to be completed by March of next year.

“There is an opportunity to complete this now during daytime low tides. Low tides in the winter tend to be at night,” Greater Victoria Harbour Authority spokesperson Stella Garcia said Wednesday. “The work involves access from the water, with some access on the shore.”

The walkway, running to the Wharf Marina, will remain open this week.

It’s time to rehabilitate the old pier, which has some pilings dating back a century. Some original wood pilings will be replaced this winter with new wood pilings.

Mechanical and electrical upgrades, along with repairs to other structural components of the pier, will also be carried out this year, Garcia said.

After this week, work is expected to resume in October and finish in March.

The job could include short-term disruptions to power or water, the harbour authority said in an updated statement. Advance notice will be provided to affected live-aboards and businesses. Commercial clients who operate seasonally will not be affected.

Work on the site was announced last year. The pier handles about 250,000 visitors annually.

Every effort will be made to provide access through the project site for pedestrians and vessels, the harbour authority said. However, periodic closures or adjustments to pedestrian and waterway access can be expected.

Environmental monitoring will be carried out.
