Alberta is projected to rack up a deficit this year of between $2 billion and $3 billion.
Finance Minister Doug Horner said the province is taking a hit from volatile financial markets and lower resource revenues. The first quarter budget figures show revenue is $400 million less than expected due mainly to lower bitumen and conventional oil royalties and lower Crown land lease sales. Horner projected further belt tightening.
