VANCOUVER — A worker is in hospital after falling through an awning at Vancouver’s Hotel Georgia on Tuesday morning.

Const. Jason Doucette said police were called just before 6 a.m. Tuesday to the sidewalk outside the hotel, located at 801 West Georgia Street, for the report of a workplace accident.

“One man has been taken to hospital in serious condition after an apparent fall and WorkSafe B.C. is on scene conducting their investigation,” said Doucette in an email.

WorkSafe B.C. spokeswoman Trish Knight Chernecki confirmed the agency was investigating the fall after being contacted by police on Tuesday.

“Preliminary information indicates the worker fell from the second floor and has been taken to hospital,” said Knight Chernecki.

No further details have been released on the extent of the man’s injuries.

According to a hotel management statement issued by Rosewood Hotel Georgia spokeswoman Caterina Gleijeses, the worker was a contracted cleaner with A Plus Cleaning & Janitorial Ltd.

“At approximately 5:30 a.m. this morning, a contracted crew member from A Plus Cleaning & Janitorial LTD was injured when he fell while cleaning the awning of Rosewood Hotel Georgia,” the statement read.

“Our thoughts are with him and his family and we wish for a full speedy recovery. The safety of our guests and all who work with us is of paramount importance.”

Police were on scene to assist WorkSafe B.C. as needed. There was no disruption to traffic in the area, though a section of the sidewalk was cordoned off for some time while investigators examined the scene.

Weather at the time of the accident was rainy, with 29 km/h winds.
