Victoria Police blocked off Bay Street to traffic between Cook and Chambers streets for more than two hours Sunday afternoon while they attempted to talk a distraught man out of a house.

At least a half a dozen police officers along with  members of the emergency response team and ambulance personnel surrounded the house near the corner of Bay and Empire streets around 3:30 Sunday afternoon in an attempt to talk the man out of the house.

No through traffic was allowed on Bay.

Media were kept well back but the man emerged from the house several times and could be heard yelling obscenity-laced comments that he was okay and that they should call his psychiatrist.

A police spokesman did not return calls for comment.
