SURREY — All five occupants of a car — including two children — were killed in a horrific crash in Surrey on Sunday morning.

The collision took place around 11 a.m. at 176 Street and 32 Avenue, about six kilometres from the U.S. border, RCMP said. A stretch of Pacific Highway for several blocks near the crash scene remained closed for hours.

It appears a westbound Dodge Caravan sped through a red light, then crashed into a mid-sized car, Sergeant Dale Carr told reporters.

The driver of the minivan was the sole survivor.

A spokeswoman for B.C. Ambulance Service said one air ambulance and four ground crews were dispatched. One person was transported via helicopter to Royal Columbian Hospital in critical condition.

“We did not transport anybody else,” said Chris Harbord. “It’s a multiple fatality incident.”

The car was torn in half. Carr called it the worst collision he has witnessed in more than 20 years.

No ages, names or other details have been released.
