Truck driver hauling beer fails breathalyzer test

One for the road didn't go so well for a truck driver hauling beer through Langley and neighbouring Lower Mainland communities.

One for the road didn't go so well for a truck driver hauling beer through Langley and neighbouring Lower Mainland communities.

At about mid-day March 9, RCMP Fraser Valley Traffic Services (FVTS) received a message from RCMP Port Mann Traffic Services, that a white semi-truck, with red lettering was east on Highway 1 in Langley, driving erratically.

Later in the day, while in Abbotsford another commercial truck driver called the RCMP to report that a white semi- (with red lettering on the side), hauling a white trailer was driving east on Highway 1 and was again driving erratically and had made a hand gesture to the complainant as he passed. The suspect semi was described in detail and included the licence plate of the trailer.

A Traffic Services RCMP officer spotted the truck at about 4 p.m. in Abbotsford and observed it swerve into his lane. The truck was pulled over and the driver failed a roadside breathalyzer test.

The driver was served an Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) for 90 days and the semi-truck tractor was impounded for 30 days. The truck and its cargo of beer were impounded into a local tow yard.

The semi-truck driver and his female passenger took a cab ride to Chilliwack.

"Although this story has an element of humour and irony, this is a reminder that impaired driving is a serious matter. Operating any vehicle; in this case, a truck with a loaded trailer while impaired is extremely dangerous and can have devastating outcomes" said Cpl. Ronda Rempel of B.C. RCMP Traffic Services.
