VANCOUVER - An Insights West survey has found that about one in five B.C. residents describe themselves as ‘hardcore’ or ‘regular’ fans of the Seattle Seahawks who are in this Sunday’s Super Bowl football game.

The online survey found that 44 per cent of B.C. residents will follow the game “very closely” or “moderately closely.”

For men, the figure is 62 per cent; for those 35 to 54, it is 53 per cent, according to a news release.

The survey also found that 43 per cent of British Columbians said they were “very excited” or “somewhat excited” by the Super Bowl game. This level of excitement, Insights West found, was similar to last year before the Sochi Winter Olympics and the World Cup in Brazil.

Only five per cent claim to support the New England Patriots, the team which will face Seattle to determine the top team in the National Football League.

Across the province, 21 per cent claim to be either hardcore or regular fans of the Seahawks. A total of 20 per cent describe themselves as occasional followers and 13 per cent as playoff fans.

Results are based on an survey conducted between Jan. 23 and Jan. 26 of 803 B.C. residents aged 18 years of age and older. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
