'Please avoid the area': Massive boulder blocks B.C. road

A safety assessment now needs to be done.

Several large boulders have fallen off a mountain and have landed on a road in Hope.

Flood Hope Road between Silver Creek and the 'town' of Hope is closed on Thursday after the massive rock fell onto the road.

The District of Hope said operations staff are onsite and are undertaking cleanup.

"Please avoid the area if possible,” states a spokesperson. "A geotechnical firm has been secured to assess the origin of the rockfall and will be onsite tomorrow morning."

Road repairs and a safety assessment will need to take place before the road can reopen.

"Upon their professional advice and in the interest of public safety, the road will remain closed until deemed safe to reopen. Local traffic is permitted only for those residents and businesses within the closure area," states a spokesperson.

Back in September, a wildfire caused slope instability and resulted in rockfall on Highway 1.

Hope has been battered by not only a wildfire but also severe flooding back in November 2021 during a series of storms.
