A cyclist has been killed and two others seriously injured after they were hit by a car in Richmond on Sunday.
Richmond Mounties say the three cyclists were part of a group of six biking eastbound along the 23000-block River Road when, shortly after 10 a.m., a 2013 Lexus heading west collided into the six cyclists.
A 33-year-old Vancouver man was pronounced dead at the scene. Another cyclist, a 39-year-old man, was taken to hospital in critical condition, while a third man, a 46-year-old, was listed in serious condition. Both injured cyclists are from Vancouver.
The three remaining cyclists sustained minor injuries.
Police cordoned off a section of River Road, near Westminster Highway and the border to New Westminster, as members of the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit began its investigation.
Richmond RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dennis Hwang said the collision scene was difficult for officers to investigate.
“To put it into some perspective, the carbon fibre frame and forks on one of the bikes was snapped in multiple places like twigs or matchsticks,” he said in a statement.
The 19-year-old driver from Burnaby was not injured. He stayed behind until officers arrived and has been co-operating with police.
Hwang said it is too early to determine what caused the crash. He said the cyclists were wearing their helmets at the time of the collision.
