A new ferry-terminal building in Campbell River is scheduled to open next year, replacing the current aging structure.

Work on the 1,668-square-foot building is expected to start at the end of October at the earliest and take about 10 to 12 months to complete.

A request for proposals was issued in August. The contract is expected to be awarded on Oct. 2.

The new facility will feature an indoor passenger ticketing area, a self-serve kiosk and washrooms.

The building’s design will ensure that a second vehicle ticketing booth can be added in the future if needed, B.C. Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall said Thursday.

Improved drop-off space and a new exit lane from the pre-ticketing area will be built as well.

During construction, the ticketing process will be modified.

A toll booth will be located at the terminal’s entrance and a ticket agent will handle payments using a mobile point-of-service device, Marshall said.

The size of the vehicle holding area will be reduced temporarily at times because contractors will need to use some of the space to store construction materials, B.C. Ferries said.

Washrooms in trailers will be available for customers.
