Emergency crews responded to a pair of car crashes in the Lower Mainland over the weekend, including an accident in Surrey described by police as “very bizarre.”

Around 6 a.m. on Sunday, a black SUV and a white sedan collided while travelling on 152nd Street near 92nd Avenue in Surrey.

The collision caused the white car to crash into a house, said Surrey RCMP Staff-Sgt. Dale Carr, and the people in the black SUV stepped out to help them.

But when they stepped out of the SUV, Carr said, “it appears as though they failed to put it in park.”

“So they step out of their vehicle and it rolls down the road backwards for a small distance, and hits a pole, which jars it into drive, and then it goes forward and then it rolls into a house. Very bizarre,” said Carr.

The drivers and vehicle passengers sustained only minor injuries, Carr said, but the damage to the homes was significant.

Police were investigating to determine the cause of the accident, Carr said, but it appeared alcohol wasn’t a factor.

And in Maple Ridge, a single-car accident sent a person to hospital Saturday night.

Around 10 p.m. on Saturday, a car travelling on Lougheed Highway crashed into a lamppost, and tumbled down an embankment.

The car was on fire after the collision and the driver was unconscious, said a B.C. Emergency Health Services spokeswoman.

The driver was transferred to Royal Columbian Hospital, but the patient’s condition was unknown.
