Car involved in head-on crash at Massey Tunnel was going wrong way

VANCOUVER — RCMP traffic investigators say a car travelling on the wrong side of the highway through the Massey Tunnel resulted in a multi-vehicle crash that sent three people to hospital Sunday.

VANCOUVER — RCMP traffic investigators say a car travelling on the wrong side of the highway through the Massey Tunnel resulted in a multi-vehicle crash that sent three people to hospital Sunday.

A 26-year-old Vancouver man suffered life-threatening injuries after his southbound Volkswagen Golf collided head-on with Toyota RAV4 in the northbound lane on Highway 99 just south of the Highway 17 overpass in Delta.

Police say the 19-year-old passenger in the Toyota suffered serious injuries in the crash, while the 48-year-old driver suffered “unknown injuries.”

Both were taken to hospital.

A third vehicle, a Honda Pilot, was also involved in the collision. Police say the driver and passenger were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

No names were released.

“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances by which the driver ended up travelling in the wrong direction,” said RCMP Deas Island Traffic Services lead investigator Cst. Manjit Gill.

The northbound lane of Highway 99 was closed for a number of hours while the investigation progressed.

The RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision — and who has not already spoken to police — to contact Deas Island Traffic Services at 778-290-2400 and cite file 2018-949.
