A 79-year-old man from the Williams Lake-area is expected to make a full recovery after he was mauled by a black bear Sunday.

Conservation officer Justin Bell says the man and his wife were picking huckleberries near Big Lake, east of Williams Lake, when the sow with a yearling attacked.

Bell says the bear attacked for a few minutes, injuring the man’s face, arms, leg and buttocks, before it backed off and watched him.

He escaped and his wife was able to drive her husband for medical help.

Officials won’t be looking for the bear after determining her attack was defensive.
