What are the top three issues?
Transportation Planning: All aspects of transportation including cycling, automobiles, pedestrians and public transit must be integrated and planned regionally. Decisions around zoning and density within the urban containment boundry should focus on results that are less automobile dependent.
Environmental Stewardship:In Saanich we have a strong track record of innovative and effective environment programs and climate change policies. We must continue to enforce the urban containment boundry, protect agricultural land and enhance the urban forest.
Fiscal Management: It is important to balance the many demands for public services with the tax payers ability to pay for those services.Amid an uncertain economy, the core challege is to identify our priorities. Spending wisely is an obligation to our children.
Why should people vote for you?
I have a strong record of community service.
My broad experience gives me the background to balance the many issues and competing demands on local government with the tax payers ability to pay for those services. As a mother and grandmother I am committed to ensuring that we protect our natural environment, invest wisely in the community infrastructure and promote healthy active living for all ages.
What are the best things about your community?
Saanich is blessed with an amazing natural setting that includes beaches, lakes, forests, meadows and streams. Its diverse neighbourhoods range from urban to rural and it is home to a wide range of educational institutions, recreation facilities and cultural endevours.Saanich is a safe community that is protected by an effective team of community based police, firefighters and disaster preparedness personnel co-operating regionally. The Saanich of today is a legacy of decades of strong Community Associations, sports organizations and a history of volunteerism.
What are the most vexing things about your community?
Every neighbourhood is experiencing increased traffic and with it the challenges of maintaining the quality of life. While much of the traffic results from our own actions, there appear to be more and more vehicles crossing through Saanich as people travel throughout the region.
Our natural rural areas have always shared the landbase with a wide range of wild animals. However in recent years the increase in the deer and wild geese populations have become a problem for farmers, a nuisance to residents and a potential safety hazard on the roads.
