Memory Lane: RV park precedes Richmond Olympic Oval

Campers and RVs could stay on River Road during Expo 86.

An RV park used to be on the site of what is now the Richmond Olympic Oval.

What existed before the Richmond Olympic Oval was built?

The Friends of the Richmond Archives posted a photo of Richmond RV Park, located at 6200 River Rd. and taken in 1986.

Parked on the lot were campers and RVs.

The RV park was built to accommodate visitors coming to the Lower Mainland for Expo 86, a world fair that centred around Science World in Vancouver.

“The park was in a convenient, central location for visitors to the Lower Mainland, with easy access to Vancouver and surrounding cities,” the Friends wrote on Facebook.

The site is now home to the Richmond Olympic Oval and is surrounded by condos and businesses, with more condos planned for the area.

Richmond currently doesn’t have any RV parks or public campgrounds.
