Burnaby RCMP's Gang Enforcement Team seized this handgun on Hastings Street in July 2023, according to police.

A 28-year-old man has been charged after allegedly carrying a loaded handgun in his man purse on Hastings Street in Burnaby last summer.

Marc-Andre Toureau was charged on March 25 with possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, possession of a firearm without a licence or registration and possession of a non-firearm weapon knowing he was unauthorized, according to Court Services Online.

The charges relate to an incident in the area of Hastings Street and Gilmore Avenue on July 3, 2023, according to Burnaby RCMP.

At about midnight, officers with the detachment's Gang Enforcement Team approached a parked vehicle.

Police said a man outside the vehicle was observed discarding a "large knife" and attempting to walk away.

The man was detained, according to police, and a search of his hand bag revealed a loaded Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm handgun.

Toureau was charged nearly eight months later.

He was released on $1,000 bail on April 4, according to court documents.

His next court appearance is scheduled for today (April 25) in Vancouver provincial court.
