On this day:
In 1900, Canadian Jim Caffrey won the fourth Boston Marathon in a then race record time of 2:39:44.4

In 1970, four days after a ruptured oxygen tank crippled Apollo 13 while en route to the moon, astronauts James Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean.

In 1982, Queen Elizabeth II and Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau signed the Proclamation of the Constitution Act, which established the Charter of Rights and Freedoms as part of the country’s new constitution.
