Team BC wins gold at nationals

Six Delta Falcon players win field hockey national medals

The Under-15 girls BC Rams provincial team made a statement at the National Championships in Calgary, going undefeated in round robin play and putting in impressive efforts in the semi-final and final matches to capture gold.

The U15 BC Rams were coached by a local field hockey talent Danielle Lacroix, who also supports the community in her role as the recreation complex facility manager for City of Delta at the Ladner Leisure Centre.
The Rams defeated Alberta, Ontario Central and the BC Stags (their Vancouver Island rivals) to place first in their pool and secure a spot in the semi-finals.

This set the stage for a nail-biting semi-final match against Ontario West.

While BC carried most of the play, the teams were closely matched with scoring chances at both ends of the field. The game remained tied at 0-0 until just under two minutes left to play when the Rams were awarded a penalty corner and found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

Delta Falcons player Taylor Katsube assisted on the play that would eventually prove to be the game-winner and help the Rams advance to the gold medal match against Ontario Central.

Ontario Central was looking for retribution for their round-robin loss against the Rams, however, Team BC had other plans.

From the first whistle, the Rams dominated play and with an exceptional possession game and poured on the attack. The Ontario goalkeeper was able to make numerous big saves, but the relentlessness of Team BC could not be denied as the Rams won national gold with a convincing 4-0 win.

Katsube led the attack with four goals in the tournament, good for second in tournament scoring.

Other local Delta Falcon field hockey players that won medals were: Rowan Child and Brendan Guraliuk from the U23 men - gold; Gavin Bains from U23 - silver; Bailey Mitchell from the U23 women – bronze and Eve Carrothers U18 women’s - gold.
