Thanks to Pastor Danny Stebeck of Ladner Christian Fellowship for his article that appeared in the Delta Optimist on Oct. 22.

Well written, clear and to the point......it was refreshing to read something that challenges contemporary values that are often centered upon greed, self-glorification and a lack of respect.

Sadly, the dark side of Halloween along with horror and gore is rarely linked to the real pain and victimization that many individuals face. Evil as a concept and its focus upon fear, hate, suffering and the hurting others should not be glorified nor celebrated within a cultural cloak of “fun” and “thrills.”

One only needs to speak to the victim of a violent crime to appreciate the horror and fear that they faced while being victimized. There is nothing funny nor thrilling about being hurt and certainly no reason for our enlightened society to celebrate “evil” by way of fear, gore, horror and the gruesome aspects of Halloween.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Halloween and there most certainly is a place for fun and positive, respectful costumes and celebrations. Unfortunately, over the years Halloween has taken on an unchecked dark side that should cause us to pause and think. Do we really need more fear, gore and horror in our lives?

Whether one is a follower of Christ or a non-believer; Pastor Danny Stebeck's points are well made. Contemporary community cultural values would do well to learn from the religious tenets of Christianity.
