Let's go back in time and visit the Charles Green family's first house in the Crescent Island area, which they named Greencroft.
Charles Green and his wife Elizabeth were one of the first pioneering families in Delta.
Charles, 21 and his brother Arthur, 20, of Durham County, England, travelled to Vancouver Island on the passenger steamer Tynemouth in 1862.
Charles returned to England in 1864 to marry Elizabeth Heppell.

They returned to Victoria where the first four of their eight children were born.
In 1871, the brothers both bought land in the Crescent Island area.
Charles brought his family to Delta in 1872 where they lived in the small house that they called Greencroft.
That first home was replaced by a larger house in 1890, which still stands today at 5592 River Road.
Charles played many roles in the community, including being a member of the school board and municipal council.
Arthur, who worked as a surveyor, eventually sold his property to Joseph Burr.
Charles and his descendants continued to farm until 1966 when their farm was sold to George Reifel.
