The cherry blossoms are coming - and you can help herald their arrival in traditional Japanese fashion.

The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre is getting ready to mark the arrival of spring with its O Hanami event April 3 and 4.

The festival is a Japanese tradition of welcoming spring and enjoying the beauty of the cherry blossoms.

It kicks off with O Hanami Eve on Friday, April 3, from 6 to 10 p.m., when you’ll be able to enjoy performances, demonstrations, displays, food and a variety of shops showcasing Japanese art and culture.

On Saturday, April 5, festivities run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors of all ages can enjoy stage performances, martial arts demonstrations, Japanese-themed shops, a bookstore and food vendors, plus bonsai, Japanese calligraphy and origami displays. There will even be an outdoor play area for kids, including a bouncy castle (weather permitting).

You can also book your spot at a tea ceremony. Ceremonies happen at noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m., and tickets are $8 general, or $6 for members if booked in advance ($10/$8 at the door).

Plus, you can try out kimono dressing.

Friday night admission is $5, and Saturday is $3 (free for Nikkei Centre members and children five and under).

See centre.nikkeiplace.org for all the details.
