Local organizations are reaching out to help New West pets this weekend.
A number of organizations are joining forces to host a community pet outreach event on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Moody Park, near the off-leash dog area. Volunteers, New Westminster Animal Services staff and local businesses will be on site to provide services, information and outreach to New Westminster pet parents.
“This is the sixth annual community pet outreach event. It was the result of a few different animal welfare organizations wanting to join together to help out pet owners who are struggling to meet their pets’ needs, such as low- or no-income pet owners – people on a fixed income, seniors, those receiving social assistance, etc.,” said Margie Fox, an animal services officer with the City of New Westminster. “The need is great in our community, as well as other communities across the province.”
All of the participants at the outreach event are donating their time, services and supplies, Fox said.
Bosley’s and New Westminster Animal Services will oversee the “food bank” at the event, where pet food and supplies will be available for pet owners. Mutt & Moggy will provide force-free, non-aversive training advice, Paws Pet Centre will give free ear cleanings and nail trims and the Royal City Humane Society will help pet owners who need assistance to get their pets neutered. Starbucks Columbia Square is providing refreshments.
“Many kind people have already donated supplies (food and litter) for the event. However, we can always use more,” Fox said in an email to the Record. “Items can be dropped off at the event itself, at our animal shelter, or at Bosley’s (Columbia Square).
