Rish Koya is trying to help his students stay fit amid a COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 18, the owner of Koyabell Fitness on Sixth Street hosted a fitness class for his students in Moody Park. He said it was done safely by following social distancing requirements.

“We are going to make sure we are six feet apart,” he said before the class. “Nobody is touching. Nobody is high-fiving. No fist bumps. Nothing.”

Kettlebells, which are part of the workout Koyabell, were disinfected before and after being used.

“There is a kettlebell shortage. Whatever we have left is what we have left,” Koya said. “I am going to sell them off to our students.”

In an effort to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 crisis, Koyabell Fitness closed and started offering classes via a Koyabell app. Folks record their workout and send it to Koya, who can send back comments about their technique.

“We were actually setting this up in advance (of closing) because, really, that is where the market is going,” he said. “They download the app. It’s super simple. Anybody can use it.”

The Koyabell crew also has a group chat where they can post photos and videos, and connect with each other.

Koya hopes to host another outdoor workout for his students. In addition to being a good workout, he said it was fun and provided a good dose of Vitamin D.

“If we do an outdoor workout, I think I want to limit it to five people,” he said. “I also want to have at least another coach or two there, or someone watching. We do fly, we do move around. I don’t want us to get too close.  Just to make extra sure.”
