Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Oct. 14 to 21:

• On Oct. 15, police attended a mischief complaint in the 8000 block of Northwood Road, Halfmoon Bay, after a homeowner woke to find windows of her vehicle smashed out and a door handle ripped off. Further investigation revealed dried mud smeared on the vehicle exterior and inside, and marks that suggested the culprit was actually a bear attracted by leftover food inside the vehicle. Police remind residents to remove any possible attractants from their vehicles to deter opportunistic animals and to avoid any fines from the Conservation Officer Service.

• Overnight on Oct. 15, police attended a mischief complaint after the caller noted a vehicle parked in the 700 block of Park Road, Gibsons, with a smashed-out window. Police noted the suspect(s) left behind a number of muddy paw prints on the exterior and that the fast food wrapper-strewn interior was ripe with the smell of rotting food. Police are attempting to locate the registered owner and the Conservation Officer Service has also been notified about the incident. 

Impaired driving collision

• On Oct. 15, police, along with Emergency Health Services and the Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department, attended a single-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near Orange Road, Roberts Creek. The lone occupant and driver had to be extricated from the vehicle, which had flipped onto its side. Once the uninjured driver was removed from the vehicle, she was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After two fail results, the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Hit and run

• On Oct. 15, police attended a hit and run at the intersection of Pratt Road and Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after the first vehicle, which was travelling straight through the intersection, was struck by the left-turning second vehicle. The second vehicle driver pulled over briefly but then left without getting out to exchange information with the other driver. A witness had captured the collision on his dashcam and was able to provide police with the suspect vehicle licence plate and description. Police located the suspect Learner Driver and her heavily damaged vehicle in Gibsons. The driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield on a left turn and failing to exchange particulars. The matter has been referred to ICBC. 

• On Oct. 16, police attended a two-vehicle incident at the intersection of Highway 101 and Henry Road, Gibsons, after the first vehicle was struck by a left-turning second vehicle. Both vehicles sustained damage and had to be towed from the scene but no serious injuries were reported by the first vehicle driver. The second vehicle driver was seen getting out of his vehicle but fled the scene on foot before police or paramedics could speak with him. The file is still under investigation.

Collision

• On Oct. 20, police attended a four-vehicle incident in the 800 block of North Road, Gibsons. The vehicles were southbound on North Road near Reed when the first vehicle collided into the second vehicle and caused a chain reaction of rear-enders involving two more vehicles that were stopped at the red light. The third vehicle sustained the most damage and had to be towed from the scene and its occupants were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The first vehicle driver was issued a violation ticket for following too closely and the matter has been referred to ICBC.

Impaired driving

• On Oct. 20, police initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle travelling well over the posted speed limit on Pratt Road near Malaview Road, Gibsons. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of possible intoxication from alcohol, advised she was just coming home from a drinking establishment and had last consumed alcohol shortly before driving home. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and after two fail results was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On Oct. 20, police witnessed a vehicle on Highway 101 in Roberts Creek driving at erratic speeds and wandering back and forth in its lane. Police initiated a traffic stop and noted the driver exhibiting signs of possible intoxication from alcohol. The N-driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and after two fail results was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, a Notice of Impoundment for 30 days, and a violation ticket for driving contrary to restriction. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Found property

• On Oct. 21, a woman’s wallet was found at the public washroom at Friendship Park, Sechelt. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file 2019-7356.

Shoplifting

• On Oct. 19, a theft was reported at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way, Gibsons, after a female suspect took several items including a black dress, black cardigan, and a necklace, into a change room and then left with the items without paying for them. Police will be reviewing surveillance video to identify the suspect, described as a slim female in her mid-twenties with black hair who was wearing a black jacket, black jeans and boots. The file is still under investigation.
