Letter: Powell River Recreation Complex needs an elevator

Powell River Peak letter

I believe it is time Powell River Recreation Complex installs an elevator [“Powell River Community Forest has year of windfall profits,” May 3].

When the facility was originally built there was less of a focus on community accessibility and this has changed in the last four decades. There have been improvements made to accessibility in the pool area, which is appreciated, but in 2019 the need for an elevator is long overdue.

I have heard there is talk of putting in some form of stair climber in the future, which would be sorely inadequate and of no use to people who have other mobility issues or parents with strollers, and at busy times would create congestion and lengthy waits that would not improve accessibility.

When this issue has been raised in the past, the response has been that both levels are accessible but people with mobility challenges should not be expected to go outside, in our climate, just to access another level of the building.

I hope the ongoing planning for upgrades will seriously consider the need for an elevator.
