Les Voix Humaines Consort of Viols bring a new, quite extraordinary musical experience to the Coast Recital Society on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 27 at 2:30 p.m. at the Raven’s Cry Theatre. CRS president John Storer will host a pre-concert chat with the musicians at 1:30 p.m. This wonderful Montreal ensemble mesmerizes audiences worldwide with dashing performances of early and contemporary music.

The original Les Voix Humaines was founded some 30 years ago by Susie Napper and Margaret Little. In 2007 the duo was joined by Mélisande Corriveau, Marie Laurence Primeau and Felix Deak to form Les Voix Humaines Consort of Viols, taking a refreshing look at the huge repertoire for multiple viols. The ensemble takes its name from a viola da gamba composition by the 17th century French composer Marin Marais.

The Les Voix Humaines Consort of Viols ensemble will perform Lachrimae or Seven Teares, by the great English Renaissance composer John Dowland. The outstanding British lutenist Nigel North joins the ensemble for this rarely performed work for lute and viols. Nigel North is recognized internationally for his outstanding performances as soloist and ensemble musician.

The viol is a bowed string instrument, similar to the cello, that first appeared in Europe in the late 15th century and subsequently became one of the most popular Renaissance and Baroque instruments. The lute is one of the most gentle, subtle, yet technically demanding of “old” instruments.

The ensemble’s unique, controversial ideas offer a new profile to consort playing in which rhythmic freedom and ornamentation play an integral role. The program will also include a performance of a contemporary work by B.C. composer Stacey Brown.
