Susan Bertoia to adjudicate in speech arts and drama

Susan Bertoia will be adjudicating the speech arts and drama discipline at this year’s Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts. Bertoia is a professional theatre artist, devisor, actor, director and teacher.

Susan Bertoia will be adjudicating the speech arts and drama discipline at this year’s Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts.

Bertoia is a professional theatre artist, devisor, actor, director and teacher. She has also served as an adjudicator at drama and speech arts festivals throughout B.C. for over 15 years. This year she will adjudicate the Coquitlam Festival of the Performing Arts and Cariboo Festival of the Performing Arts. This will be her second time at the Sunshine Coast festival.

Her invigorating artistic style of performance, with specialization in physical theatre and mask, make her a sought after teaching artist and performer across Canada. She is an adjunct professor at UBC, teaching Commedia and devised performance, and conducts professional development workshops with the Association of BC Drama Educators.

As a Jessie award-winning actor, Bertoia has performed at many venues including: PuSh International Performance Festival, The Arts Club Theatre, Western Canada Theatre, Firehall Theatre and Richmond Gateway Theatre.

She is the recipient of the Vancouver Jessie Richardson’s Professional Theatre Awards for Outstanding Performance Award and The Gordon Armstrong Theatre Artist Award, which recognizes creative initiatives. 

She also directs multi-platformed shows ranging from youth engaged theatre to professional ensemble productions. Training includes: BFA in Theatre (UBC); Piccolo Teatro di Milano (Giorgio Strehler); mask making with Donato Sartori; Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre. 

The Festival of the Performing Arts, a registered not-for-profit society, is celebrating its 47th year on the Sunshine Coast from April 14 to May 10. The public is invited to come and watch the performers at many venues for no charge. Bertoia will be adjudicating on May 1 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre from 10 a.m. until noon.
