Thanks to the big hearts of Sunshine Coasters, the Rotary Club of the Sunshine Coast was able to present a cheque for $3,000 to the Sechelt Food Bank on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

The club was in Trail Bay Centre recently handing out 200 Coronavirus Survival Kits in exchange for donations. Each kit contained hand sanitizer made by Bruinwood Distillery, soap donated by the Lavender Farm and Modern Hippy, a cloth mask made by local sewing groups and a roll of toilet paper. They were quickly snapped up, often for very sizable donations.

“I can’t believe how generous Sunshine Coasters are,” said David Connors, one of the organizers of the fundraiser.

Food bank director Norm Blair said 900 families are currently registered at the food bank, and 150 use the food bank every week. He said cash donations are particularly good because the pandemic is preventing the food bank from accepting the usual food donations from the public.

The club plans to be in the mall again soon handing out “Doggie Bags” for its next project: a seating area and shelter at the new dog park on Ebbtide Street in Sechelt. Please stop by for a visit and to share your love of dogs!
