A $5,000 grant from the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation will be used to cover operations at the Gibsons Landing Heritage Playhouse (GLHP). The money comes from the foundation’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. Adding to the foundation’s contribution to the fund are the Rotary Club of Gibsons, the District of Sechelt Community Forest Legacy Fund and dozens of individuals. The playhouse’s revenue “all but disappeared,” when COVID-19 restrictions forced performers to cancel or postpone their bookings. “What promised to be an excellent season suddenly became a ‘no-show’ and GLHP was wondering how the bills would be paid until a reopening was possible,” said a release. Plans are in the works for a possible reopening in September, with reduced audience capacity and other adaptations as required by public health guidelines.
