How great to hear about the Robens family picking up garbage from Oceanbeach Esplanade (Coast Reporter, Jan. 22). I’ve heard of others who have been doing so too. Wouldn’t it be nice if people simply did not leave their garbage for others to deal with? I learned as a child that you always leave a place a little better than you found it and I try to pick up one piece of trash when I’m out walking. Kudos to residents Gord Bishop and Rod Moorcroft who hauled away some giant pieces of plastic foam from our beach in the back of Rod’s truck a couple of months back.

It’s always gratifying to see how many people use the Gibsons Recycling Depot and responsibly sort recyclables into paper, plastic, etc. Paper and cardboard are a no-brainer for recycling but we could do a lot more by buying paper products made from recycled material. The more we buy, the more industry will respond by incorporating these into the production stream. For every package of paper, toilet paper or paper towels you buy that’s from recycled paper, you’ll be saving our forests. Such an easy thing to do for a few extra cents per package.

Due to Elphinstone’s proximity to Gibsons, we have very few businesses but a lot of people have discovered the new food truck, The Shortcut, on Russell Road at the corner of Henry Road. It’s situated on the Gibsons Heritage Farm property, so you can buy greens and eggs at the farmgate while you wait for Ryan Downie to make you a scrumptious breakfast or lunch sandwich. The service is friendly and the hours are: Thurs/Fri 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sat/Sun 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The Henry-Reed farmgate is open Fridays through Sunday and remember that you can pick up cider at Sunday Cider every day, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. On a quick phone call to Quality Garden and Pet, I learned that they have lots in stock, from seeds to plants to pots. Check them out Monday through Saturday 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. or Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

When we first moved to Elphinstone in 1982, the store at Bonniebrook was still standing although no longer open. It used to provide for the needs of locals and many tourists. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a store again in that area? Judging by the huge numbers of people that walk the esplanade, a good business could be had. I seem to remember that it was on the property of Joan and Jack Warn. Joan was a wonderful artist and I bought a painting of clothes on a clothesline from her way back when.
